I recently came across this link http://geektechnique.org/projectlab/753/how-to-turn-your-ipod-mini-into-a-flash-based-ipod where the hacker du jour ripped out the Hitachi minidrive from his old iPod and replaced it with a 4GB compact flash card. Apparently, 32 and 64 GB CF cards are becoming less and less of a mirage: http://gadgets.fosfor.se/64-gb-compact-flash-from-samsung/ so I wondered if it would be too far-fetched to consider replacing the 30 GB spinning metal in the PMA430 with some solid-state memory. It's not going to be cheap (I found one 16GB card for ¬ 250.00, which leads me to assume that the 64GB version would actually be cheaper if it were made of diamond), but it would certainly lift the PMA to a whole new level. If it could be done, that is...

Interesting thought. Although a very small external card reader would be almost as good. Remember that the AV line has a slot for CF cards? How nice it would have been to have that as an option
You're taking my word for it? ___________________________________________ I also have a 60GB 5G Black iPod (don't tell anyone)

I agree that for storage reasons the external option would be easier. However, I was primarily looking at battery life. Still, 250 Euro for 16 GB... Ouch!

Battery life would gain... speed, too. I'll look for your upgrade guide

Hmmm... it says 'drop-in replacement' but I have not seem anything that indicates IDE. If it uses another connector type (zif, etc) we're out of luck.

Leaving alone for the moment that there are as yet no 32 GB micro SD cards, CF is basically a drop-in replacement: the pins of the hard drive and the CF card should match. I'm not even sure a SD card would work, even with an adapter. Also, 16 GB CF cards are readily available at the moment. You really don't want to know the price (they appear to start at around 250-275 euro), but they're out there. I decided to wait a bit before trying the swap: at these prices the CF card would set me back as much as I paid for my PMA. Not really the smart thing to do...
